Listen to life-long cyclist David from Flookburgh telling the story of how he's adapted his riding in the face of serious health challenges, allowing him to enjoy the freedom of the outdoors and to connect with the people on his doorstep.
Ways Around The Bay Engagement Officer, Lauren recently met David by chance whilst out checking a cycle route and they got chatting. We were so inspired by his story, we hooked him up with Nigel Thompson from the Morecambe Bay Podcast.
David's cycling journey
Cycling has been part of David Greenhalgh’s life since he was a teenager. He once had the offer of a job in Switzerland and decided to cycle there from his home – in Barrow!
It was only the cold that prevented him from completing his challenge but by that point, he’d managed to reach Dover which is no small achievement on a single geared machine.
These days, he’s often seen piloting his powered-assisted recumbent cycle along the backroads of Flookburgh and along Grange promenade.
A spinal injury over 30 years ago means he’s had limited movement in his left arm and leg, curtailing his cycling although not permanently. He managed to ride an adult tricycle for a while but acquiring a recumbent which offered vital neck support, has made a real difference.
Being able to get out again, under his own steam, has been liberating.
“The most I get out of this, is meeting people because otherwise I’d be stuck in the house and I would only see the nurses who come twice a week and my cleaner. When people see me on the recumbent, they use it as a starting point for a conversation because they may never have seen one before.”

His hope is that one day, networks of linked cycle paths will allow a full tour of the Bay to be possible. There are already paths in the nearby Lune Valley as well as the promenade at Morecambe which David rates as ideal for a visiting recumbent rider.
Having the ability to make the most of the area’s scenery is vital and after an enforced absence of several months recently, he’s looking forward to making the most of the coast this summer.
“I love it: it’s the combination of exercise and conversation that makes a difference to me.”
